Huawei Mate X5: Huawei’s star foldable

the most peculiar and enigmatic renewal of Huawei’s star foldable Huawei Mate X5

Just a few months ago I was able to review the Huawei Mate X3 , Huawei’s folding phone with a normal phone format when closed. Inheriting much of the hardware of this device, the Huawei Mate X5 is now official.

The renewal of the flagship folding has been presented in China with a new processor, a slightly refined design and the peculiarity that, if we want a new panel, we will have to go for the version with more internal storage.

Technical sheet

new version with little new

As soon as we look at the dimensions of this phone we realize that the base is exactly the same as what we find in the Huawei Mate X3 . The size of the panels and technologies used are also identical and even the camera configuration does not seem to have changed. It repeats this with a double 6.4 + 7.85-inch panel, with a much friendlier 20.9:9 aspect ratio compared to some direct rivals.

Huawei has not given data on the processor, although Chinese sources suggest that it would mount the same Kirin 9000S manufactured in SIMC’s seven-nanometer process . A big step in the Chinese semiconductor industry that is a breath of fresh air for Huawei: they can go back to using chips with 5G, since they do not have American technology.

A peculiarity in this phone is that, although the screens are the same, in the collector’s edition the internal panel changes from using LTPS technology to using LTPO technology. This means that the refresh rate can be reduced to 1 Hz, thus reducing power consumption. It also improves the panel coating, which goes from using Kunlun Glass to another own glass based on basalt.

The brightness of the internal displays has also been improved. The decision is quite peculiar, so we summarize in this way

  • Huawei Mate X5 collector’s edition : 1,800 nits for both panels.
  • Huawei Mate X5 16 + 512 GB : 1,200 nits for the internal screen. 1200 nits externally.
  • Huawei Mate X5 12 + 512 GB : 1,000 nits for the internal screen. 1,200 nits for the external screen.

The decision to offer more nits and LTPO technology by paying for more RAM and storage is something we had not seen until now. A Huawei strategy to get consumers to embrace the higher cost versions.

For the rest, we are dealing with the same phone, with slight differences in the camera module and slightly sharper lines on the body itself.

Versions and price of the Huawei Mate X5

The Huawei Mate X5 has been announced in China, but its price has not yet been revealed. There is also no news about the possible arrival of this phone in European territory.

This foldable will be available in silver, black, green, gold and purple. At the moment, it can only be reserved for about 127 euros at the exchange rate in its native country.
